Opening Up People's Lives

Linda Eaton was a leading light in the world of arts and crafts and the voluntary sector throughout her life and was an award winner several times over. She was active in Blackpool for over thirty years working with grassroots communities, individuals and groups to encourage local people to become involved in creative activities. Her main motivation was to motivate and enthuse those who had no previous experience of art or crafting to help them develop their self confidence and awareness and to afford them wider social opportunities.

Following Linda's untimely death in 2011, her husband Brian was keen to carry on her work and to ensure that her legacy continued to be of benefit to local communities. He worked tirelessly to develop a network of positive partnerships with community centres, craft groups and social support services and in 2012 launched the Linda Eaton Craft Awards in partnership with Claremont Park Community Centre and the Help2Cope community interest company in Blackpool.

The Linda Eaton Craft Awards scheme (LECA) aims to open up people’s lives to new experiences and hobbies and is actively encouraging first time crafters to come and 'have a go'.

Launching the scheme in 2012, Brian Eaton said;

“Linda was one of those amazing people who have a wide range of skills and aptitudes that enable them to perform with distinction right across the Arts and Crafts field. Above all she was a great encourager and motivator of people and took great delight in the success of others.  I wanted to set up these awards as a testament to her lifelong dedication to the world of arts and crafts and to encourage as many people as possible to get involved in crafting and the creative arts, from first time triers to more experienced practitioners. The awards are aimed at absolutely everyone, even if you have never been involved in any type of craft work before. They are an opportunity to explore new hobbies and pastimes, to release your inner creativity and to open up a whole new world of fun and enjoyment”

True to this ethos LECA is aimed primarily, though not exclusively, at people who have limited social interaction and integration, be they older people,  people living alone and experiencing feelings of social isolation, low income families or people who are experiencing or recovering from both physical and mental health issues. The scheme provides an opportunity for people to meet new friends, engage in social activities and develop their self confidence, awareness and esteem in a supportive and non-threatening environment as well as allowing them to develop vital peer support networks. It is significant that, although very much regional in its influence, the scheme is based in Claremont Ward which has the highest population of lone residents, low income families and HMO's in Blackpool. As such the awards provide a vital link in promoting intergenerational understanding and tolerance and a greater level of community cohesion as well as the undeniable benefits, comforts and support that it affords to often vulnerable individuals through the therapeutic value of creative activities.

Having said that the scheme is also just as appealing and relevant to experienced artists and crafts practitioners and those who attend a wide variety of creative groups and organisations across the region. LECA affords them an opportunity to share their skills, talents and experiences with others and to develop a network of like minded people, helping to promte their work within the creative community.

History:
The Linda Eaton Craft Awards began in Blackpool in 2012 and enjoyed huge success in its inaugural year.  With the emphasis firmly on community involvement and participation and on fun,  the Awards attracted over 50 entries on the theme of 'The Great British Seaside' from people throughout the North West and culminated in a celebratory Awards Ceremony, opened by the Mayor of Blackpool, Councillor Sylvia Taylor at Blackpool Central Library in October 2012.

In 2013 the organisers were determined to build on the successes of year one and networked with arts and crafts organisations, community groups and services to move the scheme forward in developing positive community involvement, participation and engagement. The result was an increase in the number of participants with over 80 entries being submitted from a wide social background reflecting the new theme of 'That's Entertainment'. The Awards Ceremony was moved to Blackpool Football Club and included a free hot buffet, a bar and live entertainment with over 100 people attending.

In 2014 the scheme continued to grow in popularity with over ninety entries being received and approximately 120 people attending the Ceremony at Blackpool Football Club on Saturday October 11th.

The theme for 2014 was 'The Great British Countryside' and saw two completely new prizes being awarded. In addition to the Individual Category Prizes, the Overall Winner and Runner Up Awards and the certification for everyone who submits an entry, two special judges prizes were introduced. The first was the 'Best Newcomer Award' for a first time entrant to LECA in the hope that it will encourage those who sometimes ask themselves 'Is my work good enough?' to realise that the answer is a resounding 'Yes, It is!'. This category also takes into account those people who may have used arts and crafts as a way of overcoming some kind of adversity in their lives.

The second special award, The Judges Award, recognises the wide range of experience and abilities represented by our entrants. Whilst remaining true to the overall ethos that LECA is open to absolutely everyone and particularly beginners and first time crafters, we recognise that some of our entrants have been involved in the world of crafting for many years and have achieved a high level of technical skill and 'professionalism' in their work. The Judges Technical Merit Award will continue to be given to a piece that shows this high level of technical skill and artistic understanding and is aimed at more experienced practitioners. and longer term artists.

The Theme for LECA 2015 was ‘In The City, Around The Town’ and was a landmark year for the scheme. For the first time the Awards were sponsored by local company Select Energy and this added an extra dimension to what the organizers were able to do with the development of the competition. This was reflected in the fact that for the first time LECA attracted over one hundred entries from around the North West! The sponsorship also allowed the organizers to introduce the new LECA Juniors competition which will culminate in December with an Awards Party and which is already proving to be very popular with local children and young people.

LECA 2016:

LECA continues to be free to enter, an important feature for its target group, and continues to ensure that every single entrant takes away a personally named certificate of achievement for their work which can be entered into one of five main categories. These are Traditional Painting & Drawing, Textiles & Fabrics, Card & Paper Craft, 3D Art and Photography and cover such diverse elements as sewing and knitting, needlecraft, embroidery, water –colours, oil painting, sketching and drawing, tapestry, greetings cards, paper cutting,  sculpture, origami, digital and film photography, ceramics, pottery, jewellery, print making, graphic art and computer art. Each category has a Winner and Runner Up Prize with the Runner Up receiving an engraved trophy and the Winner receiving an engraved trophy plus a £50 craft voucher. There is also an Overall Winner and Runner Up Prize and Winners and Runners Up in two special categories. The third and fourth placed entries in each category receive a 'Highly Commended' Certificate.

The Theme for LECA 2016 is ‘This Is My World’ and Entry Forms will be available from January 1st 2016.
